Buffy:

Chug, Buffy, chug!

Buffy finally rebels against Giles in a major way. Tired of always having to be on Slayer-alert, she sneaks out to a frat party and has one drink. Karma, of course, punishes her for her misdeeds by sending a giant, phallic snake her way. Fortunately, she is the Slayer, so she can handle it (And I mean that in a completely nonsexual way).

Angel:

Emote, Angel, emote!

Okay, for the scene in the graveyard, did we get dropped into some weird parallel universe? Was anybody else completely lost? Up to this episode, Angel has shown definite flirtage signs. Yes, it's been awkward and not very well-done flirting. But he's definitely shown an interest. To the point of getting jealous of Xander in When She Was Bad. And now in this episode, he starts to slam on the brakes? Since when? I don't blame Buffy for getting upset over that conversation. It made absolutely no sense to me. It seemed like the writers were trying to drum up some conflict where there is none. The only explanation I can think of for Angel's sudden change is that perhaps he's on edge with Spike and Dru being back in town. But this is never followed up on, so it's hard to say.

Course, then Angel has the audacity to get jealous when Buffy goes to a party with a different guy. Hello, big guy? Remember when you just shot Buffy down? That negates any right you may have to jealousy.

If anything, that argument belonged at the end of S3 where Angel is deciding to leave Buffy for her own good.

But kudos to him for coming around and inviting her for coffee at the end.

Emote, Angel, emote!

Xander:

Be a man, Xander

Xander doesn't come out in a good light in this episode. When he's not showing Angel-jealousy, he's showing Tom-jealousy. Truthfully, all the jealousy gets a little tiring. He even goes so far as to try to get Buffy to patrol after having heard that she's going to a party.

However, he does do the part big-brother, part jealous non-lover thing and follow her to the party. In doing so, he does end up somewhat helping her.

Willow:

Willow is assertive

Willow shows some balls in this episode. She gets onto Buffy for lying to Giles. Then she unleashes on Giles and Angel in the library. It's good to see Willow let loose like that, and is a sign of what's to come. She makes valid points and manages to spur them into action. Go Willow.

Giles:

Fighting invisible demons

Giles finally gets a little slap in the face courtesy of Willow regarding his behavior towards Buffy. He's slowly coming to realize that Buffy is not the typical Slayer, and he's learning to deal with her more effectively.

I do like the final scene with him and Buffy. He gently scolds her, and then offers his own apologies. We see the start of the father/daughter relationship between the two.

Cordelia:

The redhead is unimpressed

Cordelia comes off as incredibly shallow and self-centered in this episode. Which, of course, she is. This episode just highlights it more than usual. She not only drags Buffy to the party, but ditches her at the first opportunity.

Plot:

Evil fraternity. It's a pretty lame plot, truthfully. And Willow's out-of-nowhere conclusion that the frat is kidnapping the girls stretches the realm of credibility. Very weak.

Bad Guy:

Tom Warner is actually quite charming, and I did like him as the baddie. Even though I didn't like the plot he was in. I saw shades of Ted Bundy in his performance for some reason.

Arc:

Not an arc episode.

Overall:

It's Jonathon!

I'm not a fan of this episode. The plot is weak, and somewhat nonsensical. We have a very strange Buffy/Angel scene that completely doesn't go with what's happened in previous episodes. Special performance award goes to Danny Strong for his spiffy suit-acting. I adore Danny as Jonathon.

3 out of 10. Definitely one of the weaker episodes of the season.

Best Moment:

When Willow gripes at Giles and Angel. We see a hint of the more confident and assertive Willow that develops later in the series.

Episode Wallpaper:

It's a wallpaper. Click it!

This is actually a fairly simple wallpaper. I love the opening scene with the three of them watching an Indian film and trying to follow along. It's just so normal for the show. And Willow is adorable in it. I had to try to capture it.
