Episode 2.18 Killed by Death

Characters:

Buffy Angel Xander
Willow Giles Cordelia

Plot

Bad Guy

Arc

Overall (5/10)

Best Moment

Buffy:

hospital!Buffy

We find out in this episode that Buffy has a fear of hospitals because of a traumatic experience in one as a child. However, in this episode she is so weakened by grief over Miss Calendar's death that she becomes very sick and has to be admitted to a hospital.

Because this is the Hellmouth, she soon realizes there's a demon prowling about the hospital killing children. We get another case of Buffy seeing demons that no one else does. At first, the gang thinks that Buffy is simply trying to create a defeatable opponent, as aptly suggested by Cordelia.

However, they soon realize that there's more going on than Buffy's overactive imagination. In the end, there's a demon. Buffy realizes that it killed her cousin way back when. She kills it. Happiness abounds.

Angel:

Xangel

Angel attempts to take Buffy out in her weakened state, but those pesky friends of hers get in the way. Curse those meddling kids!

He gets to play the stalker again by trying to visit Buffy in the hospital. Eventually, he gives up and settles for taunting Xander about his love for Buffy. Looks like Angel's getting bored of taunting Spike.

Xander:

Crick in the neck

Xander comes out pretty well in this episode. First, he helps the other Scoobies in beating back Angel in the beginning. Then, he gets to stare down Angel in the hospital. That takes guts to do that directly after Angel has murdered someone you know.

He also gets to bicker a bit with Cordelia, showing his trademark jealousy. And finally he helps Buffy defeat the bad guy and save the day. Xander was a busy boy in this one.

Willow:

It's Pippi Longstocking!

Willow was just as busy as Xander. While Xander was on the front lines helping out, Willow was working behind the scenes. She is research girl with Giles, and then she helps Buffy investigate the doctor. If it weren't for her, Buffy would be dead after having ingested the virus. Go Willow.

Giles:

Giles discovers the world outside the library

We see Giles holding up fairly well after Jenny's death. He has a nice moment with Buffy's mom. It seems that Giles is putting Jenny's death out of his mind and distracting himself. When reminded of it, though, we see how much he is hurting.

Cordelia:

Cordy

Cordelia looks to have fully embraced Scoobyhood. She helps fight off Angel in the beginning. Then she actively helps to investigate what's going on in the hospital. And she surely enjoyed doing the research thing with Giles. Note how excited she got over the information she found.

Plot:

There's a demon in a hospital that's killing kids. It's a thing.

Bad Guy:

The Kinderstod AKA Freddie Kruger.

Arc:

Not an arc episode.

Overall:

Buzzer buzzer buzzer BEEP!

Well, it's an okay episode. I always wondered why the kid would just start talking to Buffy out of the blue like that. And the story of Buffy's past with her cousin, while interesting, somehow seems a little trite for a Buffy episode. I know that they're trying to make a connection between Buffy's need to do something to fight death given what just happened with Jenny. But it just comes off a little awkward.

It is a fairly creepy episode, though, and a nice little interlude before we get back into the arc.

Special performance award goes to whoever played that security guard. Cause he did have the perfect nose.

5 out of 10.

Best Moment:

The final scene with the three friends watching TV together. As the series go on, we see scenes like this less and less. It's nice to watch while we have it.
